First Contest Checklist: What to Check Before You Pay an Entry Fee

Your first paid contest teaches you more about process than any amount of reading beforehand. Most new players lose their entry fee to one of three avoidable mistakes: an unconfirmed player, a role mismatch on a specific pitch, or a captain pick made on name recognition rather than matchup. This checklist covers what actually matters before you tap confirm, in the order it matters.

Confirm the Playing XI First

Team news and toss results decide who is even eligible to score points. A player might have a great recent record and still get left out for a tactical reason you have no visibility into until the lineup is announced. Wait for the official confirmation before locking any slot you are unsure about, especially in the last one or two picks of your team. If a contest locks before the toss, treat any uncertain pick as a risk rather than a certainty.

Check Batting Order, Not Just the Name

A top-order batter who opens or bats at three faces far more deliveries than a middle-order player who might not get to the crease if the top order clicks. Batting position tells you more about scoring ceiling than reputation does. The same logic applies to bowlers: someone bowling a full quota across the innings has a higher points floor than a part-time option who might get one over. Look at recent scorecards for the actual overs bowled, not just the wickets column.

Match the Bowling Role to the Pitch

A pitch report that favors spin changes which bowlers are worth prioritizing, and the same goes for a green, seam-friendly surface. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons a team that looked good on paper underperforms once the match starts. Check conditions close to the toss rather than the day before, since forecasts and pitch behavior can shift right up to the first ball.

Is Your Captain Actually Involved All Innings?

Your captain earns a scoring multiplier, so an early dismissal or a bowler who only gets a short spell caps your team’s ceiling regardless of how well the rest of the XI performs. Favor a captain with a role that keeps them involved for as much of the match as possible — an opener, a full-quota bowler, or a genuine all-rounder tend to be safer bets than a middle-order specialist stuck behind a strong top order.

Set a Realistic Entry Fee for a First Try

Your first contest is also a test of your own process, not just the players you picked. Start with a smaller entry fee or a head-to-head room while you get a feel for how lineup news, pitch reports, and captain calls actually play out across a live match. Save the larger mega contests for once you have a few matches of practice behind you.
