IPL How to Play
The IPL-Specific Build Flow for a Packed Season
Generic fantasy guides skip the season context. This page does not. The build flow below is built for the realities of an IPL week: frequent lineup changes, the Impact Player rule, and matches stacked every 1-2 days.

What Makes the IPL Build Flow Different
Cross-format fantasy guides describe a one-match-a-week rhythm. The IPL season does not give you that rhythm. You are editing an XI every two days at the busiest stretch, with a franchise that can change four names between fixtures and a bench swap rule that turns a 3 PM XI into a 7 PM XI.
If you are brand new to fantasy cricket and want the absolute first-time-onboarding version, the general how-to-play page is the right starting point. This page assumes you have submitted a first team before and now want the IPL-specific version.
The 6-Step IPL Build Flow
Six steps, in this order. Skipping one usually costs more than the room entry, especially in week three of the season.
- 1
Pick a matchday you can actually watch
A live view of the toss is the single biggest edge in IPL fantasy. Skip matches you can only catch on highlights and pick the one fixture this week you will follow ball by ball.
- 2
Read the fixture in context
Venue, pitch tendency, dew factor, and the rest gap since each team last played. These four numbers do more work than any player stat. The fixtures page covers them.
- 3
Build a role-balanced XI before names
Lock the roles first: opener, anchor, finisher, three seamers, two spinners, wicketkeeper, one all-rounder. Then fill the names from within those slots, not the other way round.
- 4
Treat the Impact Player swap as part of the XI
Your saved XI has to survive a post-toss substitution. Pick a backup read for each slot — what happens if the named player is the swap-out, not the swap-in.
- 5
Choose captain and vice after the toss
Captain pick at 3 PM is a guess. Captain pick at 7:15 PM, after the toss and the XI read, is a decision. Defer the multiplier call until you have the toss data.
- 6
Lock the team and follow live
Once locked, watch the match for captain multiplier impact. A 30-ball cameo from your vice is fine. A 30-ball cameo from your captain is the difference between first and tenth.
Edit Cadence for a Packed Schedule
A packed schedule is what burns out new players. The fix is to design a weekly rhythm, not to react match by match. Use the four habits below to keep your edit window under fifteen minutes per matchday.
- Build a default XI on Sunday for the full week, then edit only the slots that the next matchday invalidates.
- Set one alarm for 30 minutes before each fixture. The toss lands inside that window, and the captain call lives there.
- Save two XI variants per matchday: one for batting first, one for chasing. Pick the right one within two minutes of the toss.
- Recycle your captain shortlist every 4-5 games. A shortlist that worked in game 1 is usually stale by game 6.
For the rule trivia that comes up mid-week — toss timing, Impact Player mechanics, rain adjustments — the IPL quick answers page is the place to keep bookmarked. For scoring thresholds and the captain multiplier, the points system page has the T20-specific numbers.
